It’s been just over a year now since we originally bought our 1976 Land Yacht Sovereign Airstream to renovate. If you haven’t been following along, it has been an incredible journey so far! You can catch up here on the blog, or on Instagram @airstreamnomad. People from all over the world ask us questions, and cheer us on from afar. We feel so blessed to have so much support, and be a part of such a unique community.
This week we focused on framing in the wheel well covers so that we can optimize our usable space in the bathroom and closet area. We use our Apple iPad to sketch out the specs and layout before even getting started. Then we measure, measure and measure again… This particular tape measure is great because it automatically locks when you pull it out. It only unlocks when you push the yellow button on the top.
Josh’s background as a Land Surveyor has really come in handy when building these custom pieces…
We bring our kitty along with us sometimes. She has already made herself at home on one of the boxes, and enjoys taking her mid afternoon nap while we work.
I swear to you, this jigsaw has been the best investment we’ve made so far for our Airstream. Its relatively compact design was great for working in the cramped space. We are planning to build just about everything inside the airstream because there really isn’t anywhere for us to work outside.
Then screwed everything together with our drills…and yes we aren’t wearing proper shoes. Unfortunately Josh has an infection in his toe, and wearing shoes causes too much pain. So he works in flip flops…
Box one is complete! Sorry for the chaotic mess, we have multiple projects going on at once…
We built two boxes, one for each wheel well. Here is one of the finished boxes, this is on the drivers side. It might not look like it, but the vertical edge that is against the wall is actually curved. Many adjustments had to be made before the board met with the wall close enough to satisfy Josh’s OCD.
Here are both of the boxes completed. Under each box, we put a few pieces of insulation to keep out the bugs. We are pretty pleased with how they turned out. Next, we will be painting them white to seal in the wood and blend in with the walls.
We recently started a Youtube channel to document our Airstream renovation in video format, and would love for you to subscribe to us by clicking here! Watch our latest Airstream Renovation Vlog below.
See you next week :)
This is very cool! I can’t see where to subscribe though….
You are already subscribed, so it won’t show it to you ;)

If you don’t mind me asking how much money do you guys plan to spend on the renovations? Me and my boyfriend are trying to figure out a realistic budget to completely renovate ours .
We are paying for ours little by little and haven’t set an exact budget. To give you a ballpark though, with appliances, wood and tools estimate around $6k-$10k (not including the actual trailer).
