If you haven’t figured it out by now, Pinterest is a website traffic powerhouse. Many people are still under the impression that it’s just a place to pin pretty photos to their virtual boards. Nope. Pinterest is a search engine, just like Google. Which means, the more people who see your pins on Pinterest, the more traffic you will get to your website. That…Is. Powerful.
Today we’re going to compare two different Pinterest marketing tools – Tailwind vs BoardBooster – that you can use to automate your growth.
Tailwind
Tailwind is a Pinterest automation and management tool system. We just started using Tailwind about a week ago and it’s been life changing. Most importantly, Tailwind is a Pinterest approved vendor. That means, you don’t have to worry about your account by using their services.
As soon as you login, you will notice their clean, sleek interface right away. We are huge Apple fans, so anything that resembles their design wins us over. The dashboard displays an overview of your Pinterest analytics for the past 7 days. You can quickly see how many repins, website domain pins and followers you have gained.
Tailwind Browser Extension
The first thing you want to do after signing up for Tailwind, is download their browser extension. It’s the easiest and fastest way to schedule pins on Pinterest.
With the extension, you can search Pinterest and find pins to schedule in bulk. Simply click on the Tailwind logo in the browser bar. It will bring up select pins to schedule.
When you select a pin (it will highlight in blue) and save it as a draft to Tailwind. We currently use the chrome extension, but it is also available for Safari, and Firefox.
Control Your Pinterest Schedule
One of the best features of Tailwind, is the ability to control the exact time you want your pins published. Even more, Tailwind takes the guess work out of when to post. They offer optimized time slots for you to pin to Pinterest based on their extensive data research. This feature is not yet available on Boardbooster.
Or, you can create time slots for each day of the week and schedule your pins in those slots. If your pins are not doing as well as expected, you can reorder the schedule.
We’re currently based in California and if we relied on pinning when it was most convenient for us, we would miss key periods of time when most of our audience is online in Canada and the UK.
Once your pins are scheduled, you will see your calendar in the sidebar. If you’re unhappy with the order of your pins, Tailwind makes it super easy to shuffle your que. This helps your pinning look less spammy and more natural to your followers. Pins are displayed in both calendar and list format with a thumbnail of all the pins.
Tailwind Analytics
You need analytics to measure and track your growth. With Tailwind analytics, you can see which group boards gain you the most repins and traffic to your website. Track your Pinterest and Instagram profiles, pins from your website domain, hashtags, and more. This information is vital to creating a Pinterest strategy that is effective.
You can even monitor your OWN domain so you know exactly what people are interested in seeing more of.
Tailwind Tribes
Tailwind Tribes are an innovative way to collaborate with other bloggers in your niche. Members of a tribe can share each others content to increase exposure on Pinterest. Tribe members add their content to the tribe for all members to pin.
Tailwind Tribes increase your exposure rate and spreads the word about your work. Click To TweetTribes are free for anyone to join, even if you don’t have a Tailwind subscription!
How We Use Tailwind
We typically pin social media, blogging and travel content. The key to maintaining three separate topics is organization and batch processing for maximum efficiency.
For example, our 5 Unexpectedly Awesome Things To Do In Vancouver post has over 20 photos. Once we publish a blog post, we click the Tailwind icon in the browser toolbar and all the photos appear.
First, click on the photos you want to schedule, and they will be highlighted in blue (just like on Pinterest). Hit go schedule, and select the board you want them to go to. Add them to the queue and boom, we’re done!
This saves us a LOT of time.
Tailwind Pricing
Tailwind offers two options. The month-to-month option is $15/month and limits you to 400 pins. Option two is $9/month but requires an annual plan commitment ($119/year) which allows unlimited number of pins. We currently pay month to month, but we will most likely be switching to the yearly plan to save money.
BoardBooster
To be completely transparent, BoardBooster is not an approved vendor of Pinterest. This means, if Pinterest wanted to, they could shut them down. However, we strongly feel BoardBooster does a great job of filling in the gaps of what Tailwind is missing. We highly recommend you keep reading and find out why.
Looping Pins
Looping is a unique feature to BoardBooster, and the main reason we use both Tailwind AND BoardBooster. This feature is essential to growing your Pinterest.
Looping takes your old pins and repins them to the top of your boards. This allows your new followers to be exposed to fresh content and reminds your old followers how great your content is!
BoardBooster Campaigns
Are you tired of having to manually pin to each group board you are a part of? BoardBooster’s solution is to start a random or scheduled campaign, allowing you to effortlessly contribute to group boards. Let us explain:
Random Campaign
Random Campaigns pull random pins from the board defined by you and repin them to any number of group boards. You can designate one or more of your boards as the source of pins, or provide a list of pins that you hand picked for this campaign.
All you need to do is specify the number of repins per day for each group board, and BoardBooster will automatically repin the right number of pins from your source while minimizing repetitiveness.
We recommend pinning no more than 1 pin per group board to avoid breaking any rules or getting kicked out from the boards.
Scheduled Campaign
A Scheduled Campaign takes pins from a ‘secret board’ and repins them to multiple boards according to your schedule. This repin schedule can include repins to different boards over a number of days.
For example, if you blog about fashion and contribute to several fashion group boards, you can create “My Fashion” campaign that includes all your fashion group boards. Then, whenever you post a new outfit, simply pin it to the secret board that feeds “My Fashion” campaign. BoardBooster will repin it to each group board at the time that you configured.
This is one of the features we dislike about BoardBooster because storing all those secret boards on your Pinterest can get messy. We prefer to use the random campaigns to contribute to group boards.
Pin Doctor
The pin doctor is an excellent tool that allows you to check any of your boards for problems and improve the quality of your pins. This helps you rank higher on Pinterest and signals them that you are a quality pinner and they should show people more of your pins.
The pin doctor tests for 9 different problems:
- Missing links
- Broken links
- Pins that link to suspicious websites
- Redirecting pins
- Pins that link to potentially irrelevant pages
- Pins that link to extra slow websites
- Images that are too small
- Duplicate pins based on the same image
- Duplicate pins based on the same link
Unfortunately, this is not a free tool in BoardBooster. It costs $0.01 per pin that is checked. We have not used this feature yet, but are planning to in the near future.
Pin Mover
Under maintenance tools > pin mover, you can find the option to split up or move a large number of pins to a specific board.
BoardBooster allows you to set the criteria for the pins being moved. You can choose between number of repins greater than/less than X, specific keywords in pin description, and the proximity to the board’s top.
The first order is free. However, all consecutive orders are $0.01 per pin based on the number of pins moved.
Find Group Boards
Group boards are one of the best ways to grow your Pinterest following quickly. Your content will be seen by more people, and is more likely to be repined. BoardBooster has this awesome feature that enables you to find the best group boards on Pinterest! Their recommendations are based on the amount of engagement for each group.
BoardBooster Pricing
BoardBooster has multiple tiers for their pricing. They break it down based on the number of pins that you schedule per month.
- First 100 Pins FREE
- 500 Pins / Month $5
- 1000 Pins / Month $10
- 2000 Pins / Month $20
- 3000 Pins / Month $30
- 5000 Pins / Month $50
How We Use BoardBooster
We mainly use BoardBooster for the looping feature. To us, it is worth the $5/month to keep our content fresh and relevant to our followers. We plan to also use the pin doctor in the future to make sure our pins are completely optimized.
Remember: Pinterest is a search engine. Optimize your pins for maximum reach. Click To TweetTherefore, the more time and effort you put into SEO for your pins, boards and profile, the more likely you will become a recommend pinner.
Which Pinterest Scheduler Is The Best?
Both! In a nutshell, both Tailwind and BoardBooster automate pinning to Pinterest. We used to spend countless hours manually pinning content to our boards hoping our content would go viral. That was until we realized how much time we were wasting! Now, with both Tailwind and BoardBooster working together, we spend 15-20 minutes each Monday setting up our Pinterest schedule for the entire week!
Stop wasting time! Use Tailwind AND BoardBooster to grow your Pinterest. Click To TweetTailwind and Boardbooster both offer free trials. No credit cards required. You have nothing to lose by signing up, and experiencing the results in your own business.

Since we made the commitment to automate our Pinterest marketing, our followers, repins, comments and likes have gone through the roof!
So what are you waiting for?
This article was extremely helpful, and I pinned it as I will refer back to it when I have more time to study this and try out both pin boosters. I can’t seem to get my pins converted to Rich Pins even though they were confirmed. When I try to get Approval, I get an error message saying that the error is on their end. Pinterest technical support says that they are researching the problem. . . I was just wondering if you had heard of this before.
At any event, thank you for sharing!
I struggled with this same problem when I applied for rich pins as well! I had to try multiple times before I got it to work :/

I’ve heard of both of these tools before, but this is the most helpful post I’ve seen about them. I need some serious help with Pinterest, so thank you for taking the time to put this together!

I WAS just trolling through Pinterest looking for posts on the difference between Tailwind and BoardBooster. I have BB, but was hearing a lot about “tribes” and other TW benes. Definitely signing up for TW thanks to your informative post!

I tried Board Booster awhile back and thought it was too time consuming. Then I found out about the sourcing feature, and decided to give it another try. I just started using it this week. I have a feeling that I will end up signing up for it. I use Tailwind for tribes, but haven’t used it much. I use CoSchedule to pin to all the group boards that I belong to, as well as posting toTwitter and Facebook. I love it because I am no longer on my computer throughout the day.

I actually have Tailwind and I find it to be very buggy. And I also don’t want to pay them when I can uses Hootesuite for free. With BoosterBoard, do you get 100 pins free per month? I know tailwind is 100 free but then you have to pay after the 100. Thank you for the great post!
BoardBooster gives you the first 100 pins free, then you have to pay after that.

I didn’t know that Boardbooster was free for up to 100 pins? That’s great! I’ve been trying to figure out which one to use but I guess I should just try the free trial for both…and then maybe down the line getting both. I love how Tailwind optimizes and Boardbooster loops. Thanks for this info. pinning to reference later!

They both have their advantages over each other, and I currently use both as well because of what they’re able to do separately. Never lookin’ back!

I’ve never used Tailwind, but it sounds very similar to Viraltag which is what we currently use. Either way, a scheduling tool is the way to go to build a following on Pinterest. It’s amazing how quickly your followers will grow when you schedule at the best times.
Great post! I currently use Tailwind & boardbooster and definitely see a boast in the traffic to my site.

Nice comparison, thanks! I’m free-trialing Tailwind, BoardBooster, and GeniusPin. Liking GeniusPin a little bit better than BoardBooster (same features more or less, cleaner and easier to use). Already seeing good results!
I have used Tailwind, a great scheduler of Pinterest. Although thank you for this compare.
