Today Josh and I are flying from LAX to Vancouver, Canada to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. The flight is about three hours long, which is just enough time to grow restless on the plane. Crying kids, flushing toilets, various people coughing, terrible snacks, and small seats are some of the things we all struggle with while in Economy class. Today we are sharing 10 tips to help make your flight more comfortable and keep you sane until you land.
#1 Choose Your Airline Carefully
Some airlines are notorious for late, cancelled or delayed flights. It can be super frustrating to have a perfectly scheduled itinerary, only to have it messed up by a late flight. Do your research. Some airlines are more expensive for a reason! If you have an extra $150, it is worth the extra space, healthy food, and your sanity. When you’re stuck in a plane for more than 3 hours, these things start to make the world of a difference. Basically, you get what you pay for.
#2 Check In Early!
Arrive to the airport early to ensure you get to choose your seat. Getting a window seat is crucial to having a good flight. You can control the amount of light coming in with the shade, have a wall to lean against to sleep, and prevent you from getting bumped in the aisle.
Try to avoid seats near the bathroom. Trust me, it may seem convenient, but the smell alone will make you regret your choice. Trying to sleep next to flushing toilets and sick passengers for hours on end will make the entire flight miserable.
#3 Bring Your Own Headphones
Bring your own noise canceling headphones! They are a lifesaver if you want to block out unwanted crying, sniffing, coughing, and other various noises that you tend to hear around you on a plane. You can then listen to music, or just sleep in silence. We like to listen to TED talks or podcasts to keep ourselves entertained. You’d be surprised what a difference noise canceling headphones can make!
#4 Bring An Empty Water Bottle
I always have water on me. The few times I don’t, I get super dehydrated, and begin to get a headache. Airport water can be expensive, and we like to travel smartly and efficiently. Bring an empty water bottle through security so you can fill it up at a fountain while waiting for your flight.
#5 Pack Protein Rich Snacks
Snacks are a lifesaver. There is nothing worse than feeling hangry on a plane because you refuse to eat their crappy food. Like water, snacks tend to be very expensive at the airport so we make sure to bring our own. Pack protein rich snacks to keep you feeling full longer. Here’s a few essential snacks we bring with us on long flights…
- Mixed Nuts
- Protein Bars
- Peanut Butter + Crackers
- Cheese + Crackers
You can also bring fruit, and vegetables to feel like you’re eating a meal. However, don’t stuff your face! It’s much harder to digest while in the air, so eat lightly.
#6 Bring A Poncho Or Scarf
A poncho is probably my most favorite piece of clothing that I own for flights. A poncho wraps around you and can be used as a giant sweater for yourself, or the person you are flying with too. It is so soft, warm and best of all, cozy. It makes me feel sleepy which allows me to easily close my eyes, snuggle up with my man and take a nap!
#7 Request A Pillow
A high quality travel pillow can make all the difference when you’re trying to sleep on a place. Depending on the flight you’re on, the plane might provide you with one. However, we highly recommend bringing your own instead.
We love using inflatable pillows so they don’t take up much room in your carry on. It will support your head from rolling to the side while sleeping upright. There is nothing worse than waking up from a nap, only to have your neck kinked and sore. We love using this ergonomic travel pillow for maximum comfort. #8 Pack A Few Toiletries
Many first class passengers are given these items in their amenity kits. Why not bring your own? It feels so amazing to be able to refresh your mouth after breathing the stale, dry cabin air for hours on end. Go into the bathroom every few hours and brush your teeth with your own toothbrush.
Do you get dry lips? Bring a small lip balm and moisturizer to feel like you’re being pampered in first class.
#9 Wear Fuzzy Socks
You will feel so much more comfortable wearing fuzzy socks. They’re easier to pack than slippers and will keep your feet warm and toasty. Bring your own socks so you can comfortably walk around an economy flight like a luxury jet-setter.
#10 Bring An Eye Mask
Part of the reason I used to have trouble sleeping on planes was because I would people watch. My eyeballs would constantly be scanning the aisles, eavesdropping on people’s conversations, and looking around. With an eye mask I can shut out the light and people, tricking my body into sleep mode.
Invest in a high quality eye mask that sits away from you eyes with eye cavities built in. Unlike a regular eye mask, the high quality ones will allow unobstructed eye movement during REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep.
